Last-Mile Automated Transport in the Metropolitan Region Rotterdam The Hague

The Metropolitan Region Rotterdam The Hague invests € 15 million in the development of last-mile automated transport in the coming years. The development of automated transport is expected to contribute to better accessibility and public transport service delivery, and thus to more intensive use of public transport and lower public transportation costs in the long run.

The Last-Mile Automated Transport Programme 2019-2022 specifically aims to develop knowledge through the deployment of self-driving shuttles at various locations. Knowledge is shared through the extensive regional innovation network consisting of public and private sector stakeholders.

Two Last-Mile Automated Transport initiatives are currently in the implementation phase:

The ParkShuttle service at business park Rivium: The ParkShuttle is an electrically-driven, autonomous shuttle service that runs between Kralingse Zoom metro station in Rotterdam and Rivium Business Park in Capelle aan den IJssel. The first generation of the ParkShuttle was operational from 1999 to 2002. After that, the route was extended to dual lane and new vehicles were introduced with a larger capacity of 22 passengers. In nearby future, the third generation of vehicles will be operational and the track will be expanded to a public road. In addition, innovative ways to increase the future capacity of the ParkShuttle are being explored.

The Haga Shuttle service at the Haga Hospital: The Hague is since mid-2019 one of the first large Dutch cities to have an autonomous shuttle service. It enables visitors and patients of the Haga Hospital to use last-mile connectivity in the form of an electric, autonomous shuttle. The shuttle connects the nearest bus and tram stop with the hospital entrance and will initially operate for a period of four years.

The feasibility of six other initiatives is currently being explored at:

  • DELFT, Technical University of Delft shuttle service
  • LEIDSCHENDAM-VOORBURG, Mall of the Netherlands shuttle service
  • ROTTERDAM, Rotterdam-The Hague shuttle service
  • SCHIEDAM AND VLAARDINGEN, Local on-demand automated transport services
  • THE HAGUE, Business Park Binckhorst shuttle service
  • ZOETERMEER, Dutch Innovation Park shuttle service
